JOB TITLE: Patient Information Navigator
 
The role of the Release of Information (ROI) Patient Information Navigator is to provide technical coordination and support for patient (or their authorized representative), internal and external providers and health care entities and/or payers requiring access to protected health information.  This employee will assist with the education and use of the Main Line Health System Patient Website and Portal.  The Patient Information Navigator must demonstrate knowledge of all state and federal laws as well as applicable regulatory guidelines for ROI.  The Patient Information Navigator provides respectful and considerate care, focused on the patient’s individual health information needs.  This position engages in direct customer service and must perform duties and interpersonal relationships in a manner consistent with a positive image of the Health Information Management Department and Main Line Health System.
 
 
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
                                        
  1. Using electronic tools and historic microfilm and/or paper records, releases information consistent with all state and federal laws, HIPAA mandates and Main Line Health System policies by evaluating requests for health information from patients and third parties.
  2. Handles all requests and inquiries for patient health information whether received via mail, fax, phone, MyChart, EpicCareLink, or any other electronic means.
  3. Prioritizes release of information requests, retrieves medical records from active and inactive and interdepartmental locations, electronically tracks and delivers records in accordance with established procedures.
  4. Contributes to the overall success of Main Line Health System by performing all other duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Education: 
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate sufficiently to perform job duties required.  Approved Medical Terminology is required.   
  • Associate’s Degree in HIM or Health Information Technology and/or Analytics or its equivalent progress toward a baccalaureate degree is required.
 
Licensures & Certifications: 
  • Certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information is preferred.
  • Other credentials pertinent to Privacy, Security, and Release of Information from AHIMA strongly preferred.
 
Experience and Critical Skills:
  • Two years work experience in HIM is required.  ROI experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in EPIC or other electronic health record management software is preferred. 
 
AREA SPECIFIC WORK RULES:
 
  • Passing score of 73% or greater on MLHS administered competency assessment(s).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all state and federal laws which apply to patient records by specific age group and patient conditions.
